Automate the export of numerous mockup previews in seconds for Free

Exporting previews should be automated!

In this article I want to show you how to Automate the export of numerous mockup previews in seconds for Free. We know it is a tedious task to open each of the mockups and open the images one by one, place them inside smart objects, and export them one by one, right?

For this tutorial I will use the following product mockup Portrait Canvas Mockup with a 2×3 ratio. It is very important to make sure that the images have the correct dimensions to ensure compatibility. It’s crucial to ensure that the images have the correct dimensions to ensure compatibility.

Image Dimensions

For mockups requiring large images, I typically reduce the image size. This helps keep the mockup lightweight without sacrificing image quality. Following these guidelines will ensure that the automation works perfectly and optimally.

It is not recommended to use high resolution images in the mockups, because when we create a Smart Object (which is where you place the image, photo, illustration) with high resolution, it makes the mockup weigh many more megabytes and slows down the export process for photoshop.

If you follow these guidelines, you will get the automation to work perfectly and optimally.

In this example, the mockup Portrait Canvas Ratio 2×3 Mockup 02 – 0.75 In Edge.psd is compatible for images of Ratio 2×3 sizes like: 20×30 cm or 8×12 In but for better optimization the size of the smart object 2363×3544 pixels, so all images you will use in this mockup must have that resolution.

Image DPI: 300

Artwork Size: 20×30 cm – 8×12 In – 2363×3544 px

Once we have our images in the correct dimensions and DPI, we can customize the mockup by adjusting shadows, brightness, and background color and texture.

How to use the Script?

Select the Smart Object layer where your images will be inserted, in this case, I will use “Canvas Layout – Mirror Wrap”.

Script replace_smartobject_image.js

This SCRIPT created by @Circle B (Right Click and Select Save Link As, download the Script) allows you to replace images inside the smart object and export a batch of images that you can then pass through the Smart Objects in the PSD before running them, and then export each image with its own unique name, all in a matter of minutes, or maybe seconds, depending on your computer’s speed and the number of images.

Search for the Script, so you must go to the Main Menu and select File / Scripts / Browse

Inside the bundle folder, there is another folder called “Export Automation Script“, select and load the file named replace_smartobject_image.js (Right Click and Select Save Link As, download the Script)

A new window will open where you will search and select all the images that you want to use in the canvas mockup.

After pressing the OK button Photoshop will process the images and this can take several minutes, I recommend you to leave some free memory so it doesn’t take so long. My recommendation is, reduce the size of the mockup so that your images are exported with the optimal size for what you are going to use them for, and this way the automation will be done faster.

To speed up the process and save time, consider reducing the size of the mockup to optimize the speed of exporting the images. and also your images should be the same size as the smart object you will use

Please share your feedback, including the version of Photoshop you used and the number of images processed, to help improve this post. I have tested this script in Photoshop CC 20.0.6.

Update: Exporting in JPG and PNG Formats

I’m pleased to announce a new update of the script discussed in this post. Download the updated script here
The script now offers two versions for exporting mockups: one in JPG format and one in PNG format. Also this new version asks for another PSD to continue working with the selected images.
